I am pleased to announce I will once again be featuring in this month’s issue of Teach Primary magazine. I have written a Key Stage 2 English lesson plan on instructional writing, using The BFG as a ‘hook’.
This practical and engaging lesson focuses on identifying and using the organisational and grammatical features of instructional writing.
Children will write a set of instructions after making their very own cup of Frobscottle, from Roald Dahl’s The BFG.
I have taught this lesson several times and it’s always one that pupils remember fondly at the end of the year. It’s one of my favourites to teach too!
During this lesson, children have opportunities to:
- take appropriate notes to plan a piece of writing
- discuss the structure, vocabulary and grammar of instructional writing
- use simple organisational devices
- use a range of appropriate verbs, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions
